 Young Hoosier Book Award

It is a school requirement that at least one (1) Young Hoosier current nominee book be read during the school year.  The purpose of the Young Hoosier Book Award Program is to stimulate recreational reading among middle school/junior high school children and to encourage cooperation between administrators, school media specialists, teachers, public libraries, and the community in providing reading experiences for Indiana school children.  The Young Hoosier Book awards program began in 1974.  Each year, teachers, students, parents, and media specialists submit suggestions to the Young Hoosier Book Award Committee.  This committee then selects twenty nominees for each grade level category.  Students take part in the process by reading five (5) books from the list.  In April of each year, the students attend a party and vote for their favorite book.  The votes are then tallied, and the winning authors are presented the award at the annual IFL (Indiana Library Federation - formally AIME) conference the following year.  Their names are then added to the list of winners, spanning from 1975 to present. As students read the nominated books they will then take the Accelerated Reader test and accumulate points for each of the books that they have read and each test that they have passed. Those students who have read and passed the test for eight (8) Young Hoosier book nominees will participate in a reward trip. In order to increase participation in the Young Hoosier program, books will have a shorter check out time - - two weeks compared to the three weeks - - and late fees will be doubled to 10¢ a day for a book that is included, in the Young Hoosier Book program.
